Description

BetterMeta is a cross-browser extension for Facebook. This extension prevents in-stream adverts and converts Reels links into legacy Video URL's. Originally created for internal purposes, perhaps some of our community members will find it useful. Ad blocking is experimental but worked as expected when tested.

Additional information

Note: Clicking or tapping on rewritten links directly will still load the Reel. We cannot control Facebook's internal routing. Users can right-click (or long-press on mobile) to access the provided Video URL. Our ad suppression technique should work without needing an adblocker but it will not conflict with their filtering methods. As such, you are encouraged to use an Adblocker (such as uBlock Origin) to further enforce your rights and refuse forced ads originating from exploitative revenue rights managers! Installing

Once you have downloaded and extracted the .zip archive into your chosen location…

🧭 Chromium-based (Edge/Chrome/Yandex/Brave/Opera)

1. Open browser and go to: chrome://extensions or edge://extensions
2. Enable “Developer mode” (top right toggle)
3. Click “Load unpacked”
4. Select the unzipped BetterMeta folder
5. Extension installs instantly—persistent across restarts

🦊 Firefox

1. Open Firefox and go to: about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox
2. Click “Load Temporary Add-on”
3. Select manifest.json from the unzipped BetterMeta folder
4. Extension installs instantly—active until browser restart

Updating

If you are not using the latest released version (v1.1), we recommend you update as soon as possible. Simply redownload, extract and overwrite the files in your existing BetterMeta directory, then reload or reinstall the extension.

Note: Facebook have recently removed the title field, presumably as Reels don't need it. This makes newer videos display the body text, which is ugly.
